ECONOMICS
There is a new EBV now in the evaluation metrics which calculates the reduced number of days to get to around 40kg live weight. Our ram average is now two weeks earlier than the national average which means significantly less food consumed and on a falling market a higher price per Kg and higher value per lamb. This is also positive for the flock’s carbon footprint.
The progeny will come to market 2 weeks earlier, and on a normally falling market (say 30p per week deadweight) will be worth £12 per head more. We estimate feed costs saved for two week says is about £6 per head, some £18 per lamb in total.
In any one year, one of our rams tupping 50 ewes, producing 80 lambs at plus £18 over an average index ram will produce an extra £1,4800 income. Over four years this equates to an extra £5,760 per ram in the flock. With lamb prices being very strong there is a real opportunity to bank these extra gains.
We start lambing on 20th February and this year we have sold 48% of our lambs by 19th June averaging 20.5Kg dead weight with 92.5% E, U & R conformation and 94% fat class 2-3H.

With Hybrid vigour our rams hold condition all through tupping and are still well fleshed in December and they have no feed until the next June. This vigour also gives them an extended life.
All rams are fully vaccinated with Heptavac P Plus, Footax and Glanvax (CLA) and MV accredited.
