Our farm was founded in 1971 by Percy Gilman. We started with just 500 acres of land at Tixover and have expanded to 3500 acres covering ground from Tixover to Glaston in beautiful Rutland. Over the years, we've grown to over 3500 acres of arable and we run 4300 breeding ewes in our commerical flock and 200 pedigree Sufftexs. Spring 2026 Update

Rutland Fast Rams

Sheep and beef production seem to be in rude health at the moment compared to arable cropping inspite of last summer’s drought and lack of grass.

At last you may say, but with ewe numbers still going down it all looks very positive. I have a job to see farmers going back into sheep in a big way as it looks like too hard work when you have got used to not working every weekend.

Long may it continue....

Now must be the time to invest in things that can significantly increase the gross margin of your sheep enterprise :-

  • Growing more grass so lambs have the best food available to express their genetic potential.
  • Have optimum scanning figures for your farm to have the most lambs for sale.
  • Reduce annual ram costs per lamb sold by having fit, healthy hybrid rams fit not fat.
  • Invest to improve flock efficiency and have the most productive and healthy stock.

Which you will be surprised to hear me say leads to Rutland Fast Rams!!

We only sell rams in the top 1% of genetic merit so you can be assured of the very best performance.

In very simple terms we need rams to have the highest potential to grow as fast as possible on what ever system you are running whether creep or grass. If you are on grass and have a very dry period in the season, lambs with high genetic potential have the ability to grow very fast when conditions change and grass and roots burst into life as last autumn.

The other crucial requirement is that rams do not lose condition during the tupping season and will then last for many years. Our hybrid rams have the vigour to achieve both these attributes. Our rams are not fed any hard food when we pull them out from the ewes. When I go to ram sales I’m still staggered by how fat rams are when presented and how buyers pay the highest prices for the fattest rams, they can only melt. We have full confidence in our rams which are guaranteed to the end of November in the year of purchase. We start to feed our shearling rams in June so that they are in ideal condition for tupping in September.

We continue to seek the highest Index Suffolk and Texel rams available and this autumn we have bought one of each breed to add to our genetics stock.

We only retain and sell rams in the top 1% (Index 299) of genetic merit so you can be assured of the very best performance.

Is there any other breeder that only sells top 1% rams?

Our 2025 ram lamb (now shearlings) average was 380.

We have topped the Signet performances for several years on the Suffolk evaluation for:-

Top Ram Lamb

Top Shearling Ram

Top Stock Ram

These performance figures are all based on accurately recorded data; which takes into account all of the factors involved in getting the highest value for a carcase as early as possible. This data is compared with all the flocks across the country to give an accurate evaluation across all flocks. Scan Weight is based at about 40Kg and is the main driver of the Indexes which is the time it takes to get a lamb to slaughter weight. It is the absolute crucial factor in getting lambs away at the highest prices.Coupled with their hybrid vigour our rams will last longer and not lose condition over the tupping season. We also have some pure Registered Suffolk Shearling Rams for sale..
